Cue, craving, response, reward — and why the cue matters most

Cues are the cheapest intervention point. Changing your environment removes the prediction before the craving forms, which costs far less cognitive energy than resisting the behaviour later in the loop.

Attach new behaviour to existing structure

Habit stacking works because it borrows an already-encoded cue. Anchor the new behaviour to something you already do daily without negotiation, and keep the first version small enough to be unmissable.

Consolidation of new patterns occurs largely during sleep. High performers who cut sleep to practise more are removing the mechanism that makes practice permanent.
